Civil Engineering

Air Force Civil Engineering officers build, sustain, and protect the installations the Air Force operates from. The 32E Civil Engineer and 32EX EOD Officer AFSCs are responsible for everything from runway construction and base infrastructure to the identification and disposal of unexploded ordnance in combat environments. This is the career field that makes every other Air Force mission possible by keeping bases functional and safe.

Civil Engineering officers lead two distinct mission sets. The Prime BEEF (Base Engineer Emergency Force) and RED HORSE (Rapid Engineer Deployable Heavy Operational Repair Squadron Engineer) programs represent the expeditionary side of the field, deployable engineering units that construct and repair facilities in contingency and combat locations. EOD officers add a specialized layer, commanding teams that render safe improvised explosive devices, unexploded munitions, and chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear devices.

A background in engineering, construction management, or the physical sciences fits naturally here. But the field also needs officers who lead under pressure. RED HORSE units deploy to some of the most austere operating locations in the world, and EOD work carries inherent risk that demands clear judgment and composure.

Which Role Fits You?

Both careers fall under the Civil Engineering officer field, but the day-to-day work and risk profile are very different.

Choose 32E Civil Engineer if you want to lead the design, construction, and maintenance of Air Force installations. CE officers manage base infrastructure projects, oversee contractor performance, and command Prime BEEF and RED HORSE units during deployments. RED HORSE squadrons deploy globally to construct facilities in locations where commercial contractors won’t go, forward operating bases, expeditionary airfields, and humanitarian response sites. If you want an engineering career that also involves leading Airmen in field conditions, 32E provides that combination. A civil, mechanical, or structural engineering degree is common but not always required.

Choose 32EX EOD Officer if you want to lead teams that render safe explosive hazards. Air Force EOD officers command enlisted EOD technicians, develop render-safe procedures, and respond to IED threats, conventional unexploded ordnance, and CBRN incidents. The pipeline is long and demanding, and the public Air Force EOD mission baseline points to joint training tied to Sheppard and Eglin. If the combination of technical precision and operational risk matches what you’re looking for, 32EX is worth understanding in detail.

If you’re drawn to construction and engineering but want a focus on contracting and program management rather than field operations, Air Force Acquisition covers the 62E Developmental Engineer path. Officers interested in high-risk operational leadership from a different angle may also consider Air Force Special Warfare.

Common Entry Requirements

Both 32E and 32EX require a commission through ROTC, OTS, or the Air Force Academy and a bachelor’s degree. A degree in engineering or a physical science is strongly preferred for 32E and may be required for some positions. U.S. citizenship and eligibility for a Secret security clearance are standard entry conditions. EOD candidates must pass additional medical and physical screening before entering the pipeline, and the training pipeline at the Naval School EOD takes roughly one year to complete. All Civil Engineering officers attend the Air Force Civil Engineer Center initial skills course. See each role’s profile below for specific degree requirements, medical standards, and training pipeline details.
